Leiden University Libraries – Digital Exhibition Omeka S theme

Artefacto were tasked with developing a custom Omeka S theme to enable Leiden University Libraries to create a range of digital collection websites and online exhibitions.

Project features include:

  • A responsive and accessible Omeka S theme
  • Custom module for video content
  • IIIF support and Mirador viewer

We worked with the library staff to develop a responsive and flexible theme for the Omeka S platform as well as a custom module for presenting video content.

The Omeka theme needed to align with Leiden University branding while providing the flexibility to work with a range of different collections and different media types including audio, video and images.

Each exhibition is organised around various subjects or categories, so the homepage needed to support this kind of curation in a flexible but easy-to-use way.

The Omeka S platform provides a range of modular ‘page blocks’ that we have customised for Leiden University curators to use to create their own digital exhibitions.

It was also important to include IIIF support and a Mirador-based image viewer that enabled users to rotate images, zoom, view relevant image details and more.

With the base theme in place, we continue to work with Leiden University Libraries to create a theme that curators can easily use to create and manage new digital exhibitions.

The custom theme we built for Leiden University Libraries is now being used for Digital Exhibitions such as ‘Reizigers van een nieuwe tijd‘ and ‘Keuzes in oorlogstijd‘.
